Government and political leaders move to halt G5 series over concerns of gangster glorification

The upcoming OTT documentary series “Lawrence of Punjab” has become the center of a major controversy in India. The Lawrence of Punjab series, scheduled to release on April 27 on the OTT platform G5, is now facing uncertainty after strong objections from government authorities and political leaders.

This documentary has sparked widespread debate over its content, with concerns being raised that it may glorify gangster culture and negatively influence youth.

Lawrence of Punjab : Government Moves to Stop Release

The controversy around Lawrence of Punjab intensified after the Punjab government demanded a ban on its release. The Special DGP Cyber Crime wrote to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, urging immediate action against the documentary.

They joined other voices in claiming that the series could negatively impact society by glorifying criminal activities.

Akali Dal and Others Raise Concerns

The Shiromani Akali Dal also opposed this documentary. Party leaders alleged that it was part of a deliberate attempt to misrepresent Punjab and its youth.

They stated that Punjab has a rich cultural and spiritual heritage and should not be associated with gangster narratives.

Legal Debate and OTT Regulation

The Lawrence of Punjab case has also raised broader questions about OTT content regulation in India. The PIL filed in court highlights the need for stricter pre-certification rules for digital content to prevent potential social harm.

Authorities argue that without proper regulation, such content could influence young viewers in a negative direction.
