The much-awaited Tamil film Karuppu starring Suriya and Trisha Krishnan faced an unexpected setback on its release day after morning shows were cancelled due to financial and distribution-related issues. The delay left fans disappointed, especially after the film had received special permission for early 9 am screenings on Thursday, May 14.
The makers of Karuppu officially cited “unavoidable reasons” behind the cancellation of the first shows. However, reports suggest that pending payments and unsettled dues prevented the film from receiving the final theatrical clearance required for screenings.
Financial Problems Delay Karuppu Release
The release troubles surrounding Karuppu reportedly began on Wednesday evening when industry reports highlighted financial hurdles affecting the film’s distribution. Director RJ Balaji had earlier expressed confidence that the issues would be resolved before release day.
However, as the night progressed, speculation over a postponement intensified after several major theatre chains started removing the film’s listings from online ticket booking platforms. Around 1 am on Thursday, producer SR Prabu from Dream Warrior Pictures issued an apology on social media, confirming the cancellation of the 9 am shows.
According to reports, around Rs 10 crore in dues remained unsettled in Tamil Nadu, creating complications in securing the KDM (Key Delivery Message), which is mandatory for screening films in theatres. In the Tamil film industry, KDM access is often withheld until all pending payments are cleared.
Advance Booking Response Remained Strong
Despite the release-day chaos, Karuppu had generated strong buzz among audiences before release. The film reportedly collected around Rs 7.92 crore in advance bookings in India, including blocked seats, according to trade portal Sacnilk. Overseas bookings were also said to be encouraging, especially among Tamil cinema fans.

The delay reportedly became more serious due to unpaid location charges connected to EVP Studios near Chennai. Reports claim the production house owes nearly Rs 50 crore to multiple parties, leading to a legal and financial bottleneck that halted the final distribution process.
Fans React as Karuppu Faces Uncertainty
Fans of Suriya took to social media to express frustration after waiting over two years for the release of Karuppu. Many moviegoers who had booked tickets for the early morning shows were left disappointed after theatres cancelled screenings at the last moment.
Industry insiders now believe the film could still release later in the day if producers manage to settle the dues quickly. Theatre owner and distributor Tirupur Subramanian reportedly stated that exhibitors were hoping for a noon or evening release depending on updates from the producers.
Cast and Crew of Karuppu
Apart from Suriya and Trisha Krishnan, Karuppu also stars Yogi Babu, Jaffer Sadiq, Mansoor Ali Khan and Indrans in important supporting roles.
The film features music composed by Sai Abhyankkar, cinematography by GK Vishnu and action choreography by the stunt duo Anbariv.
For now, the fate of Karuppu depends on whether the production team can resolve the ongoing financial crisis and secure theatrical clearance in time for later shows. If the deadlock continues, the film’s full theatrical release may be pushed to Friday.
