Emraan Hashmi recalls being frequently stopped at immigration in the 2000s, opening up about profiling while discussing his upcoming series Taskaree.
Actor Emraan Hashmi has spoken up about an interesting pattern he saw during his early years of travel, stating that he was regularly called aside at immigration desks, which he feels may have been due to his appearance at the time.
Emraan Hashmi on being flagged in airports
Emraan made the announcement on Wednesday at the trailer presentation for his new online series Taskaree: The Smuggler’s online in Mumbai. With the actor slated to play a customs officer in the series, he was asked if he had ever been questioned by customs officers while traveling.
Reflecting on his experiences, Emraan stated, “No, I believe they have been really kind to me. They have always been incredibly kind to me when I return. But there is an overwhelming sense of terror, which is illogical. It’s like learning to drive and then becoming anxious when you see an RTO inspector on the road. So that is what occurs. When I travel alone, even if I merely pack clothes, it seems like you’re carrying 100 kg of contraband in your suitcase as you walk through the green channel.”

A Quiet, Yet Powerful Announcement
He went on to say that while he rarely had problems at customs, immigration checks were a different story in his earlier years. “But it is not at all rational. When I used to travel alone, I was frequently stopped at immigration checks, most likely due to earrings or other items. But now that they see me with my loving family, they don’t suspect me. Earlier, in the early 2000s, I was frequently hauled away to the side. That is known as profiling. I fit the description of someone, but I’m not sure who that person was,” he said.
What Emraan is up to next
Emraan was recently seen in Suparn Varma’s courtroom drama Haq, which costarred Yami Gautam. The film is inspired by the life and legal battle of Shah Bano Begum, whose historic 1985 lawsuit culminated in the Supreme Court allowing divorced Muslim women the right to maintenance.
The actor will next star in Taskaree: The Smuggler’s Web, a web series about the complicated world of smuggling and the cops tasked with countering it. The Neeraj Pandey-created sitcom, which also features Sharad Kelkar, Zoya Afroz, and Nandish Singh Sandhu, is due to stream on Netflix beginning January 14.
