Earthquake Jolts Delhi-NCR; Tremors Trigger Panic Across the Region
New Delhi: July 10- A moderate intensity earthquake measuring 4.4 on the richter scale struk parts northern India on Thursday morning, with tremors strongly felt across Delhi-NCR, including Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad.
- The earthquake shook buildings and prompted the residents to rush outside in fear
- The tremors lasted for around 10 to 15 seconds, enough to rattle windows and cause mild vibrations in buildings across the capital and surrounding areas.
According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake’s epicentre was located in Jhajjar, Haryana, at a depth of 10 kilometers and was recorded at 9:04am.
People on social media said the intensity of earthquake scared them, many said their cupboards opened due to the jolts.
- “We felt the tremors…It was really scary, my vehicle shook. It was really strong,” an eyewitness told the news agency ANI.
- Another eyewitness in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad said that he felt someone was shaking the whole shop he was sitting in.”The tremors felt quite strong. I was at a shop when it hit, it felt as if someone was shaking the shop,” he said.
No Immediate Damage Reported
Despite the widespread panic and the visible reaction of people vacating multi-storey buildings, no injuries or structural damage have been reported so far. Emergency services remained on standby as precautionary checks were carried out across sensitive locations.
“While the tremors were significant, there are no reports of damage or casualties. Citizens are advised to remain calm and follow safety guidelines,” a senior official from the Delhi Disaster Management Authority said.
Why is Delhi so prone to earthquakes
Delhi falls under seismic zone IV as per Delhi disaster management authority. This classification makes it a “high-risk zone” indicating significant chance of moderate to strong earthquakes.
