Dharminder Sharma Takes Charge as Principal Chief Conservator of Forests in Punjab

Dharminder Sharma, an experienced officer from the Indian Forest Service (IFoS) 1994 batch, has officially taken over the role of Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and the Head of Forest Force (PCCF, HoFF) for the state of Punjab. His appointment was confirmed today at the Forest Complex in Sector 68, where he took charge of his new responsibilities.

With a strong background in forestry, botany, and natural resource management, Sharma’s appointment marks a significant shift in the leadership of Punjab’s forestry department. He will also continue to serve as the PCCF Wildlife and Chief Wildlife Warden of Punjab until a new incumbent is appointed, underlining his critical role in the state’s environmental management.

A Vision for Eco-Tourism and Green Cover Expansion

During his inaugural address, Sharma expressed his gratitude to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak for trusting him with the significant responsibility of overseeing the state’s forest affairs. He emphasized that his immediate priorities would focus on boosting eco-tourism, increasing the green cover, and preserving the state’s wetlands.

Sharma’s leadership vision includes strategic plans to improve eco-tourism in the region, which has the potential to attract both domestic and international tourists while contributing to the state’s economic growth. “We need to create sustainable opportunities that highlight Punjab’s natural beauty and biodiversity while fostering environmental consciousness,” said Sharma.

One of his core focuses will also be the preservation of wetlands, a critical natural resource in Punjab. Wetlands not only support rich biodiversity but also play a key role in water conservation. Sharma underscored the importance of ensuring proper upkeep and management of these ecosystems, which are essential for both environmental sustainability and local livelihoods.

Promoting Green Initiatives and Local Employment

In line with his vision of a greener and more sustainable Punjab, Sharma is committed to increasing the state’s green cover by promoting large-scale tree plantation drives. As part of this effort, he announced the upcoming Van Mahotsav 2025 – a unique and impactful event dedicated to planting trees across Punjab in July 2025. Sharma made an impassioned call to the people of Punjab to take part in this initiative, emphasizing that planting trees today is an investment in the future of the environment.

“Bequeathing a legacy of clean and green surroundings for future generations is not just an obligation but a necessity,” said Sharma. “The government will play its part, but the people of Punjab also need to step forward and contribute to creating a healthier environment.”

As part of his broader commitment to sustainable development, Sharma also mentioned the promotion of local employment opportunities through the forestry and wildlife sectors. He noted that initiatives such as eco-tourism ventures and forest conservation projects could play a major role in providing sustainable employment at the local level, benefiting rural communities and promoting a balanced approach to development.

A Unique Profile with Rich Expertise

Sharma’s qualifications and expertise make him a standout figure in the field of environmental management. As a UPSC topper from the 1994 IFoS batch, he brings over two decades of experience in various forest and wildlife management roles. Sharma’s background as a forester, botanist, and natural resource manager gives him a well-rounded perspective on forest conservation and environmental sustainability.

His extensive knowledge of forest ecosystems, coupled with his expertise in wildlife conservation, positions him well to address the complex environmental challenges faced by Punjab, particularly in managing the state’s biodiversity and expanding green cover.

Sharma’s Plans for the Future

Looking ahead, Sharma’s vision for Punjab’s forests extends beyond the immediate focus on eco-tourism and green initiatives. He aims to drive forward innovative forest management techniques, fostering collaboration between local communities, environmental NGOs, and the government. Additionally, he is dedicated to addressing emerging environmental challenges, including the effects of climate change, soil erosion, and the conservation of endangered species.

Sharma also sees the potential for Punjab to become a leader in sustainable forestry practices, incorporating cutting-edge technology and research to enhance forest management practices.

“Protecting our environment and forests is not just about preserving nature for today, but securing the health and well-being of future generations,” Sharma said, as he outlined his long-term goals for the state’s forest sector.

Community Engagement and Public Participation

Recognizing the vital role of the community in forest conservation, Sharma is determined to engage local residents in his projects. He believes that fostering community participation in environmental initiatives is crucial to achieving long-term success in forest and wildlife preservation.

Sharma emphasized the importance of environmental education, encouraging the public to develop a sense of responsibility towards natural resources and conservation efforts.

Looking Forward

Sharma’s appointment as PCCF, HoFF of Punjab is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the state’s forestry and wildlife management. His focus on sustainable development, eco-tourism, and expanding green cover aligns with the broader goals of Punjab’s government to create a cleaner, greener, and more prosperous state.

With his wealth of experience and a commitment to building a greener, more sustainable future for Punjab, Dharminder Sharma is poised to make a lasting impact on the state’s environmental policies.
