A residential complex at the outskirts of New Delhi was inundated due to a canal’s walls breaking. The images depict waist-deep water seeping into local residents’ houses and creating problems.
The walls of the Munak Canal’s sub-branch broke last night at 11:00 p.m. (local time), flooding the JJ colony in Bawana, which is in the northern part of the city of New Delhi.
The Yamuna River in Haryana is where the canal begins, and it ends in New Delhi, providing drinking water to the nation’s capital.
Atishi, the minister of Delhi Water, went to the colony to evaluate the situation. As reported by Deccan Herald, a police official stated that relevant government departments have been informed of the issue.
The district of Sonipat in the Indian state of Haryana is receiving less water supply. To address the problem, authorities have also requested that the state government close the canal gates.
People residing in the colony are facing a flood-like situation and fear their homes getting destroyed by the water as the colony has remained partially submerged since last night.
“Water has been diverted to the other sub-branch of the canal. Repair work has already started and will be completed by today afternoon. The breached sub-branch of the canal will be functional from tomorrow,” Atishi said in a post on X.
