BRO Creates New World Record in Ladakh
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has once again etched its name in history by constructing the world’s highest motorable road in Ladakh by completing the work at Mig La Pass. The engineering marvel, achieved under Project Himank, surpassed its own Guinness World Record previously held at Umling La.
On Wednesday, the BRO team, led by Chief Engineer Brigadier Vishal Srivastava, successfully reached the Mig La Pass in Leh district at an altitude of 19,400 feet. This record-breaking feat overtook Umling La’s height of 19,024 feet, achieved earlier by the organisation. The moment was marked by the hoisting of the National Flag and BRO flag at the pass, symbolising pride and resilience.
Strategic Importance of Mig La Pass
The new connectivity from Likaru to Mig La Pass and onwards to Fukche village holds significant strategic and infrastructural importance. It serves as the third vital axis from the Hanle sector to Fukche, a critical border village near the Indo-China frontier.
According to BRO officials, the road will provide enhanced logistical support to forward areas while strengthening India’s border infrastructure. In a region often marred by harsh weather and treacherous terrain, the achievement reflects not only engineering excellence but also a strategic boost for India’s defense preparedness.
A Boost for Tourism in Ladakh
Beyond its defense value, the Mig La Pass road is expected to open new avenues for tourism in Ladakh. With sweeping views of the Indus Valley and an adventurous drive to one of the world’s most extreme locations, the route is likely to attract global travelers.
Officials noted that while the journey poses formidable challenges due to altitude and terrain, it promises visitors a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The achievement highlights how infrastructure projects can serve both national security and regional economic growth through tourism.
BRO’s Legacy of Record-Breaking Roads
The BRO has already built 11 of the world’s 14 highest motorable passes, cementing its reputation as a global leader in road construction in extreme environments. From Umling La to now Mig La, its projects showcase the indomitable spirit and innovation of Indian engineering.
The organisation stated that its engineers continue to work in some of the most unforgiving terrains, pushing the limits of human endurance and construction technology. The Mig La achievement, they added, stands as a symbol of India’s determination to enhance connectivity in remote border areas.
Looking Ahead
With Ladakh’s strategic importance rising, the construction of such high-altitude roads ensures that border villages remain connected while also fostering socio-economic development. The BRO’s latest success is expected to further strengthen India’s defense infrastructure, promote tourism, and inspire future projects in high-altitude regions.
As the world takes note of this milestone, Mig La Pass now stands as a proud example of how national security and adventure tourism can converge at the top of the world.
