Animal Ophthalmology Camp Held at Hingonia Cow Rehabilitation Centre to Address Bovine Eye Health

Jaipur, November 13, 2024  – A specialized animal ophthalmology camp was conducted on Wednesday at the Cow Rehabilitation Centre in Hingonia, Jaipur, under the joint auspices of the Gopalan Department and the Rajasthan Gau Sewa Aayog. Dr. Suresh Kumar Jhirwal, an ophthalmologist from the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, led the camp, examining 27 bovines for various eye conditions.

During the examination, a range of eye diseases were identified in the cows, including cataracts, dermoid growths, and retinal degeneration. Out of the 27 animals screened, nine were registered for corrective eye surgeries aimed at restoring their vision. This camp highlights ongoing efforts by local authorities and veterinary experts to improve the health and quality of life of rehabilitated cows in the region.

Dr. Anita Agarwal, Secretary of the Gau Sewa Commission, and Dr. Radheshyam Meena, Deputy Director of the Rural Multipurpose Veterinary Hospital in Hingonia, were present and received specific recommendations from Dr. Jhirwal regarding the preoperative arrangements necessary for successful eye surgeries on the identified bovines. Dr. Jhirwal emphasized the importance of providing a sterile and well-prepared environment for the surgeries, along with post-surgical care to ensure optimal recovery.

In addition, detailed discussions regarding the management and resources needed for the surgeries were conducted with Shri Premanand Prabhu, Director of the Hingonia Cow Rehabilitation Centre, via telephone. These discussions covered the steps required to create an appropriate surgical setup at the center and establish a plan for the postoperative care of the treated animals. A tentative schedule for the surgeries will be set soon, following proper coordination and planning to ensure successful outcomes for the animals.

The camp was organized as part of an initiative by Animal Husbandry Department Minister Mr. Zoraram Kumawat, alongside Government Secretary of the Animal Husbandry and Gopalan Department. Their involvement reflects a broader governmental commitment to advancing veterinary care for cattle and addressing specific health concerns, such as ocular issues, that can significantly impact animal welfare.

The ophthalmology camp at Hingonia underscores the importance of veterinary specialization in cattle health and the role of structured programs in identifying and treating conditions that may otherwise go unnoticed. By providing these critical services, the Gopalan Department and Rajasthan Gau Sewa Aayog aim to enhance the wellbeing of bovines across Rajasthan’s rehabilitation centers, setting a standard for proactive and compassionate animal care.

This initiative also brings attention to the potential impact of untreated eye conditions on bovine productivity and quality of life. As eye surgeries are arranged for the identified cases, officials and veterinarians alike hope this effort will not only improve sight for these animals but also highlight the importance of preventive healthcare in animal rehabilitation.
