Chandigarh/Dinanagar/Gurdaspur, April 14 — The Punjab Government observed the 134th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. B.R. Ambedkar with a powerful message of social justice, equality, and empowerment. Presiding over the district-level celebration at SSM College, Dinanagar, Cabinet Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak reiterated the state’s unwavering commitment to Ambedkar’s vision of an inclusive India.
Youth Called to Uphold Ambedkar’s Legacy
Addressing students, dignitaries, and members of the public, Lal Chand Kataruchak, Punjab’s Minister for Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs, Forests, and Wildlife Preservation, urged the youth to follow Dr. Ambedkar’s path of equality, education, and social reform.
“Following the ideology of Baba Saheb is the most meaningful tribute to his life. The youth must rise as torchbearers of his ideals,” said the Minister.
Historic SC Representation in Punjab Cabinet
In a milestone moment, the Minister highlighted that for the first time in Punjab’s history, six Scheduled Caste (SC) leaders are part of the state Cabinet. This, he said, underscores the AAP government’s commitment to political representation and empowerment.
He emphasized that these appointments aren’t merely symbolic but reflect a broader vision of inclusive governance driven by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
Timely Disbursement of Scholarships and Loan Waivers
A cornerstone of the event was the state’s success in implementing the Post Matric Scholarship Scheme. Kataruchak emphasized that funds are now being disbursed efficiently, benefiting thousands of SC students across Punjab.
“Unlike previous administrations, we have ensured that students receive their scholarships on time. Education must be accessible to all,” he noted.
Adding to the list of reforms, the Punjab Government has also waived off loans issued by the SC Corporation before March 31, 2020, offering a significant financial relief to families that were unable to repay due to economic hardship.
AG Office Reservation for SC/ST: A Landmark Reform
In a first-of-its-kind move, posts have been reserved for SC/ST candidates in the office of the Advocate General (AG). This reform opens new doors in the legal and administrative sectors, promoting diversity and fair opportunity.
Over 50,000 Jobs Distributed on Merit
The Minister further announced that over 50,000 government jobs have been distributed based on merit under the current administration. This initiative aims to empower youth, especially those from marginalized backgrounds, and ensure equal access to state employment opportunities.
Honoring National Icons in Government Offices
Continuing its tradition of honoring India’s real heroes, the Punjab Government has mandated the display of portraits of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and Shaheed Bhagat Singh in all government offices.
Kataruchak strongly condemned recent acts of vandalism against Dr. Ambedkar’s statues, vowing strict action against those involved. “The state will not tolerate disrespect toward our national icons,” he asserted.
Booklet Showcasing Welfare Initiatives Released
To commemorate the occasion, a booklet detailing the government’s initiatives for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and minority communities was released. The document reflects the state’s focused efforts in education, employment, and representation.
