Tahawwur Rana, a former Pakistani Army member, relocated to Canada and later to the United States, where he co-founded an immigration services business in Chicago. He was arrested in 2009 on charges related to terrorism, including involvement in plotting attacks against a Danish newspaper and providing support to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), the militant group responsible for the 2008 Mumbai attacks. In 2013, Rana was sentenced to 14 years in prison in the U.S. for his role in these plots.

India’s pursuit of Rana’s extradition began in 2020, with formal requests submitted to the U.S. government. After a series of legal challenges, including appeals to the U.S. Supreme Court, Rana’s extradition was approved in early 2025. Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced the decision during a joint press conference with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2025.
NIA Custody and Interrogation Focus
Upon arrival in India, Rana was immediately taken into custody by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). In a late-night hearing at Patiala House Court, the NIA secured an 18-day custodial remand, allowing them to interrogate Rana until April 29, 2025.
