In a decisive move to enhance public safety, the Punjab Police has successfully seized 80,879 bundles of Chinese kite strings, also known as manjha, in a span of just 20 days. This crackdown is part of a larger statewide campaign led by Special Director General of Police (Special DGP) Arpit Shukla, aimed at curbing the sale and use of these dangerous kite strings. The initiative is in line with the vision of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to make Punjab a safer and more secure state.

Targeting Fatal Chinese Kite Strings

Chinese kite strings, made of plastic-coated threads, have been a growing concern due to their hazardous nature. These strings, often used in kite flying festivals, have been responsible for numerous injuries and fatalities in the state, especially to people, animals, and even electrical wires. The Special DGP emphasized the importance of taking swift and effective action to eliminate the threat posed by these deadly kite strings.

According to reports, in the last 20 days alone, police teams have registered 90 First Information Reports (FIRs) against individuals found involved in the illegal sale and use of manjha. This robust action underscores the seriousness of the police force in tackling this issue head-on.

Special DGP Arpit Shukla’s Role in the Crackdown

Accompanied by Jalandhar Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma and Ludhiana Commissioner of Police Kuldeep Singh Chahal, Special DGP Arpit Shukla personally visited local market areas in both cities to meet with kite sellers and vendors. During these visits, Shukla encouraged vendors to refrain from selling the dangerous Chinese kite strings, urging them to cooperate with the police in making Punjab a safer place.

In his address, Shukla also warned of strict legal action against those caught selling or using manjha, stressing that the police would act swiftly against violators. He called on shopkeepers to report any illegal sale of kite strings to the authorities, further underscoring the collaborative effort needed to address this growing issue.

Police Actions and Ongoing Campaign

The police have been actively monitoring and targeting illegal sellers of Chinese kite strings across Punjab. In just three weeks, they recovered nearly 81,000 bundles of manjha, a significant haul that highlights the scale of the issue.
