Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann Puts Focus on Youth Recruitment in Armed Forces
Chandigarh, February 4, 2025 – Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has announced a renewed focus on increasing the participation of youth from the state in the Indian Armed Forces. During a meeting with a delegation led by Air Marshal Hardeep Bains AVSM VSM, the Commandant of the National Defence College (NDC), CM Mann reiterated his government’s commitment to not only boosting recruitment but also ensuring the welfare of soldiers and their families.
Punjab, with its rich history of serving the nation, has long been regarded as a major contributor to India’s defense forces. However, the recruitment numbers from the state have dipped in recent years, a situation CM Mann’s administration is keen to reverse. “Punjab has a glorious history in the Indian Armed Forces,” said CM Mann, acknowledging the state’s tradition of courage and resilience. “We are determined to rekindle this spirit and offer our youth opportunities to serve the nation through the Armed Forces.”
Key Initiatives to Support Recruitment
The Punjab government has already initiated several measures to boost the recruitment of youth into the Armed Forces. Among the standout initiatives are the Mai Bhago Armed Forces Preparatory Institute and the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Armed Forces Preparatory Institute, which were set up by the state government. These institutes, along with C-Pyte centers, are designed to help prepare the youth of Punjab for military service by offering specialized training and guidance.
CM Mann emphasized that these institutes play a pivotal role in providing young people with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in recruitment exams and other selection processes for the Armed Forces. These initiatives also align with the government’s vision of empowering the youth of Punjab and giving them avenues to serve the nation.
Punjab’s Legacy as the Sword Arm of India
Punjab has long been recognized as the “sword arm” of India, with its people known for their bravery and fortitude. The state also shares a 532-kilometer border with Pakistan, which underscores the vital role of the Armed Forces in ensuring national security. CM Mann highlighted the strategic importance of the state’s location and reiterated the need to continue strengthening defense forces.
“Every inch of Punjab’s land is sacred, marked by the footprints of great Gurus, saints, and martyrs who opposed tyranny and injustice. This legacy must continue to inspire the youth to serve in the Armed Forces,” he added.
Welfare of Soldiers and Their Families
Alongside recruitment efforts, CM Mann stressed the state government’s firm commitment to the welfare of soldiers, paramilitary forces, and police personnel. In line with this, the Punjab government offers a financial assistance of Rs 1 crore to the families of soldiers who attain martyrdom while in the line of duty. This gesture reflects the state’s recognition of the immense sacrifices made by the soldiers in safeguarding the nation’s integrity.
“We must ensure that the families of these brave hearts are supported in every possible way,” Mann said. This initiative is a part of a broader effort to ensure the well-being of soldiers, their families, and those in service, both in the Armed Forces and paramilitary services.
Sadak Surakhya Force: A Step Towards Safer Highways
In addition to defense and soldier welfare, CM Mann also highlighted the state government’s efforts in enhancing road safety through the launch of the Sadak Surakhya Force. This initiative is the first of its kind in the country, with 1,597 specially trained personnel (including women) deployed along 4,200 kilometers of highways across Punjab. The force is equipped with 144 fully outfitted vehicles and has contributed to a 48% reduction in casualties from road accidents since its launch in February of the previous year.
The Sadak Surakhya Force not only aims to reduce road accidents but also serves as a deterrent to traffic violations, ensuring safer highways for commuters.
Delegation Visit: Strengthening International Relations
The CM also welcomed a delegation of 15 officers, including six foreign dignitaries from countries like Sri Lanka, Egypt, Korea, Oman, and Russia. The delegation is visiting Punjab from February 3 to 7 as part of a tour to explore socio-political, cultural, and economic aspects of the state.
During their visit, the delegates will have the opportunity to observe the governance models at the state and village levels, as well as experience Punjab’s rich cultural heritage and the ongoing development initiatives. “This is an excellent opportunity for delegates to understand how Punjab is tackling challenges in governance, law and order, and community empowerment,” CM Mann remarked.
International Recognition of Punjab’s Defense Efforts
The visiting delegation expressed appreciation for the steps Punjab has taken to support its Armed Forces and their families. The foreign dignitaries lauded the state’s efforts in defense recruitment and soldier welfare, recognizing Punjab’s contributions as crucial not only to India’s national defense but also in fostering international relations and partnerships.
Conclusion: A Future Focused on Service and Welfare
CM Bhagwant Singh Mann’s vision for a stronger, more engaged Punjab in the Indian Armed Forces is clear. By combining recruitment efforts, soldier welfare programs, and enhanced road safety initiatives, the state is not only ensuring the security of its people but also contributing to the country’s defense on a broader scale. Through strategic initiatives and unwavering support for the Armed Forces, the Punjab government is fostering a new generation of young patriots ready to serve their nation.
