Punjab’s Third Online NRI Milnee: Addressing Grievances and Strengthening Ties with Overseas Punjabis
February 19, 2025 : Punjab’s Administrative Reforms and NRI Affairs Minister, Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal, conducted the third edition of the online NRI Milnee at the Punjab Civil Secretariat. This initiative, launched under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, aims to provide overseas Punjabis (NRIs) with a platform to voice their grievances and seek timely resolutions. The unique online setup has made it easier for NRIs to directly connect with Punjab’s officials, highlighting the government’s dedication to addressing their concerns effectively.
The Success of Punjab’s Unique NRI Grievance Redressal Initiative
During the session, Dhaliwal shared that the online NRI Milnee is a pioneering approach that has made it possible for NRIs to resolve issues from the comfort of their own homes. He emphasized that this initiative is unmatched by any other state in India, showcasing Punjab’s commitment to strengthening its connection with the global Punjabi community. The NRI Milnee has grown in popularity, with thousands of overseas Punjabis praising the initiative for its transparency and ease of access.
“We are continuously striving to make sure that the issues faced by NRI Punjabis are addressed swiftly. The NRI Milnee is part of our broader efforts to stay connected with the diaspora and ensure their voices are heard,” said Dhaliwal, acknowledging the warm participation from NRIs in the recent meeting.
Addressing 109 Grievances with the Support of Punjab Police
A total of 109 complaints were received during the third online NRI Milnee. Among them, 56 grievances were sent via email, and 53 were sent through WhatsApp. The complaints ranged from property disputes, legal matters, to concerns regarding NRI families in Punjab. The Punjab government is prioritizing the resolution of these complaints and ensuring that the issues are addressed through efficient channels.
To expedite the process, Dhaliwal instructed the ADGP NRI Wing of Punjab Police, Praveen K Sinha, along with the SSPs (Senior Superintendents of Police) of the concerned districts, to take immediate action and resolve the complaints promptly.
Minister Dhaliwal’s Personal Commitment to NRI Concerns
Minister Dhaliwal reiterated his commitment to overseas Punjabis during the meeting. “I am always available to solve your problems and concerns. Whether online or offline, we will leave no stone unturned to help you. I am just a phone call away,” he assured NRIs. His approach underscores his dedication to improving the NRI community’s experience with Punjab’s government services.
In previous months, the Punjab government has also hosted nine offline NRI Milnees across the state, giving overseas Punjabis the opportunity to interact with state officials in person. This hybrid model of both online and offline grievance redressal has been well-received by the NRI community, with many expressing their gratitude for the government’s responsiveness and personal touch.
Raising Awareness Against Human Trafficking and the ‘Dunki’ Route
A significant part of the discussion during the third NRI Milnee involved raising awareness about the dangers of illegal migration. Dhaliwal appealed to the youth of Punjab to avoid the ‘Dunki’ route—an illegal method of migration that has put many lives at risk. He strongly condemned human trafficking, urging NRIs to be cautious of fraudsters and unlicensed agents who exploit vulnerable individuals by charging large sums of money for fraudulent overseas job placements.
“Human trafficking is not only dangerous but also involves the loss of life and the hard-earned savings of individuals. This is a matter of life and death, and I urge you all to be vigilant,” Dhaliwal stressed. His warning aims to protect Punjab’s youth from falling into the hands of unscrupulous agents, ensuring their safety and well-being as they pursue better opportunities abroad.
Continued Collaboration with Punjab Police and NRI Associations
The meeting also saw the presence of several prominent figures, including Additional Chief Secretary Dilip Kumar, ADGP Praveen K Sinha, and AIG NRI Ajinder Singh. Their support in the NRI Milnee demonstrates the Punjab government’s united front in tackling NRI grievances.
Additionally, Parvinder Kaur, President of the NRI Sabha, was present to extend her support. She commended the government’s efforts to ensure that NRIs are heard, expressing confidence that the initiative will continue to improve the NRI experience.
A Pioneering Initiative for the Future
The third online NRI Milnee is yet another step towards ensuring that Punjab’s NRI community remains connected and well-supported. The online format provides unparalleled accessibility, helping resolve issues swiftly and efficiently. This initiative aligns with the Punjab government’s ongoing efforts to build a stronger bond with its overseas citizens while ensuring their rights and concerns are prioritized.
Minister Dhaliwal’s call for NRIs to stay informed and reach out with their complaints has fostered a sense of trust within the diaspora, giving them a direct line of communication with state officials. With continued efforts from the Punjab government, the online NRI Milnee stands as a key platform in enhancing the quality of life for overseas Punjabis, making it easier for them to resolve concerns without unnecessary delays.
