Maharashtra forms panel to study banning petrol/ Diesel vehicles in mumbai to combat worsening air quality .

Mumbai, one of the world’s most populous cities, is grappling with severe air pollution, worsened by traffic congestion and construction projects.

To tackle this, the Maharashtra government has formed a committee to explore the feasibility of banning petrol and diesel vehicles in Mumbai.

Led by retired IAS officer Sudhir Kumar Shrivastava, the committee includes experts from the transport sector, government officials, and automobile manufacturers

The aim? Transition to electric and CNG-powered vehicles, dramatically reducing air pollution and improving air quality.

The move follows the Bombay High Court's directive, which criticized the state's efforts to curb vehicular emissions and emphasized the need for urgent action.

However, the proposal faces hurdles: Mumbai’s electric vehicle infrastructure is still in development, and many residents rely on petrol and diesel cars

The committee has three months to deliver a detailed report outlining the feasibility and implications of this ban

If the ban is implemented, it could reshape Mumbai’s transportation landscape, affecting automobile manufacturers, businesses, and commuters .

The future of Mumbai’s streets could be cleaner and greener, but the city must navigate a complex road to reach that goal.
