September 12, 2026 : The Tipra Motha Party has established a commanding lead in the Tripura village committee elections 2026. The party won 1,548 of the 4,597 available seats unopposed across the state. Meanwhile, alliance partner Bharatiya Janata Party secured 82 seats without contest.
The Tripura State Election Commission confirmed these figures following the withdrawal deadline. Election Secretary Anurag Sen shared the final data on Saturday, September 12. A total of 1,630 seats will not require voting due to single-candidate nominations.

Voters will now decide the remaining 2,967 seats during polling on September 28. Counting takes place on October 5. The entire electoral process wraps up by October 8.
Tipra Motha Outpaces Rival Parties in Candidate Nominations
A total of 9,820 candidates remain in the active contest for the remaining seats. Tipra Motha leads the campaign footprint with 4,279 candidates across 587 village committees. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) holds the second-largest pool with 2,151 candidates. The ruling BJP has fielded 1,853 candidates in the grassroots election.
Opposition groups, including the Congress party, have also fielded local candidates across key tribal belts. Local observers note that candidate overlaps exist between NDA partners in several constituencies. This sets up multi-cornered contests despite overarching state-level alliances.
Security Measures Intensified Across TTAADC Areas
The Ministry of Home Affairs dispatched 74 companies of Central Reserve Police Force personnel to Tripura. State Election Commissioner PK Chakraborty confirmed the security arrangement following requests from local authorities.
Central forces will guard polling stations across the Sixth Schedule areas. Local administration officials aim to ensure peaceful voting after prolonged delays in conducting local body polls. The Supreme Court had previously directed the state to execute these village council elections without further postponement.
Strategic Shift in Tripura Local Governance Ahead of 2028
Political analyst Sekhar Datta noted that the uncontested victories strengthen Tipra Motha’s organizational control. The party previously achieved a strong victory in the Autonomous District Council elections.
These village council results reinforce party supremo Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma’s bargaining power. His position in future seat-sharing talks with the BJP ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections grows stronger.
Tribal areas cover two-thirds of Tripura’s geographical landscape. These regions hold immense sway over state-level power dynamics. The Left Front historically maintained dominance here for 25 years until 2018. Later, the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura helped the BJP break that stronghold.
Tipra Motha’s rise in 2023 reshaped local dynamics through its Greater Tipraland push. This shift altered traditional vote banks across hill councils. The upcoming September 28 vote will test whether main opposition parties can reclaim lost ground before the next state elections.
