New Delhi  ;  The Delhi Temperature soared to its highest level of the season on Monday as residents across the national capital continued to battle intense heatwave conditions. Several parts of the city recorded temperatures close to 45 degrees Celsius, making it one of the hottest days of May so far.

IMD Warns of Continued Rise in Delhi Temperature

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Safdarjung weather station recorded a maximum Delhi Temperature of 43.4 degrees Celsius, while the Ridge area emerged as the hottest location in the city with 44.6 degrees Celsius. Lodhi Road also recorded 43.8 degrees Celsius, nearly five degrees above normal.

The IMD has warned that temperatures are likely to rise further in the coming days, with some parts of Delhi expected to touch 45 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.

Dry Desert Winds Intensify Heatwave Across Delhi

Weather officials attributed the extreme heat to dry northwesterly winds sweeping into Delhi from the Thar Desert region of Rajasthan and parts of central Pakistan.

Officials explained that these winds become intensely dry while travelling across arid regions, trapping heat close to the surface and worsening weather conditions in the capital. The absence of thunderstorms or pre-monsoon rainfall has further intensified the impact of the rising Delhi Temperature across the National Capital Region (NCR).

Power Demand Surges Amid Scorching Weather

The scorching weather also led to a sharp increase in electricity consumption, with Delhi’s peak power demand touching 7,542 MW on Monday — the highest recorded so far this summer season.

Authorities have advised people to stay indoors during afternoon hours, avoid unnecessary travel, and remain hydrated to protect themselves from heat-related illnesses caused by the soaring Delhi Temperature.

Heatwave Conditions Affect Haryana, UP, Punjab and Rajasthan

The heatwave has also affected nearby regions in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Rajasthan. Gurugram recorded 42 degrees Celsius, while Rohtak touched 45.2 degrees Celsius. In Punjab, Bathinda registered a scorching 47 degrees Celsius, among the highest temperatures recorded in the region.

The IMD stated that temperatures across northwest India may rise further over the next few days, keeping the Delhi Temperature and surrounding regions under prolonged heat stress until weather conditions improve.
