Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday, February 21, 2026, instructed officials to implement a series of measures to enhance pedestrian safety in both urban and rural areas. These directives include the installation of barricades, foot over-bridges, underpasses, and clearly marked zebra crossings in crowded locations.
As part of the initiative, officials have also been asked to identify accident-prone zones where fatalities or serious injuries frequently occur. The government plans to install CCTV cameras in these areas to monitor traffic, assess risks, and work toward reducing road accidents.
CM Nitish Kumar Orders Safety Measures for Pedestrians
In an X post, CM Nitish Kumar wrote, “The State Government has taken several important decisions to ensure the safety and convenience of pedestrians. The Transport Department has been directed to install zebra crossings, barricades, foot over-bridges, and underpasses in crowded areas at the earliest.” He emphasized that zebra crossings and foot over-bridges will be constructed at identified locations to make walking safer for citizens.

The Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also highlighted that black spots — areas with a high likelihood of road accidents — will be addressed, with the construction of footpaths and installation of CCTV cameras to enhance security. “I am confident that these measures will significantly benefit pedestrians and make their daily commutes safer and easier,” CM Kumar added.

This decision falls under the ‘Saat Nischay-3’ initiative, which aims to ensure ‘Sabka Samman-Jeevan Aasaan’ (ease of living) by reducing everyday difficulties for Bihar’s citizens. The Bihar Cabinet recently approved the Saat Nischay-3 programme for 2025-2030, as part of the state’s ongoing efforts to achieve development. Bihar has already successfully implemented two previous Saat Nischay programmes since 2015.
