The Kerala Police recently conducted a massive statewide enforcement initiative titled “Operation Round Up.” This three-day special drive resulted in the arrest of 1,663 individuals across various districts. The operation specifically aimed to neutralize habitual offenders and locate long-standing fugitives. State authorities launched this mission to fortify public order and ensure citizen safety during the early months of 2026. This coordinated effort marks one of the largest law enforcement actions in the state this year. It sends a clear message to repeat offenders and those evading the judicial process.
Strategic Execution of Operation Round Up
State Police Chief Ravada Azad Chandrasekhar directed the launch of this extensive operation. The drive took place from February 12 to 14, 2026, involving a massive mobilization of force. ADGP (Law and Order) H. Venkatesh supervised the entire execution to ensure seamless coordination. Zonal IGs, Range DIGs, and District Police Chiefs led the ground teams in their respective areas.
During the intensive three-day period, officers successfully apprehended 691 persons linked to grave criminal activities. Additionally, the police tracked down 972 absconding accused who had been dodging arrest for months. This strategic focus on “wanted” lists significantly reduces the backlog of pending criminal warrants in the state.
Preventive Measures and Legal Actions Taken
The Kerala Police utilized various legal frameworks to ensure the drive had a lasting impact. Officials subjected 1,028 individuals to preventive action under Sections 126 and 129 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Furthermore, the authorities invoked the Kerala Anti-Social Activities Prevention Act (KAAPA) against high-risk targets.

Under KAAPA, 20 notorious individuals were placed under preventive detention. Externment proceedings, which involve removing criminals from specific jurisdictions, began against 30 others. Beyond violent crime, the police also prioritized road safety during the drive. They registered 1,354 cases of drunk driving across the state. Consequently, the Motor Vehicles Department has initiated steps to suspend the driving licenses of these offenders.

The success of Operation Round Up indicates a shift toward proactive policing in the state. Official sources confirmed that such focused enforcement drives will continue in the coming months. The police department aims to maintain a high level of vigilance to prevent the resurgence of “goonda” elements.
