New Delhi: Afghanistan’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign came to an early end after a series of close results in Group D. Captain Rashid Khan expressed his gratitude to fans for their unwavering support, stating that he remains motivated to give his best every time he takes the field.

The Asian side began their campaign with a 5-wicket loss to New Zealand, followed by a heartbreaking super over defeat to South Africa. Although Afghanistan secured a five-wicket victory over UAE on Monday in New Delhi, New Zealand’s win against Canada on Tuesday confirmed Afghanistan’s elimination from the tournament.

Rashid Khan took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his thoughts: “Thank you to everyone who has supported and believed in me through the ups and downs. Your love means everything. Still learning, still enjoying the game, and still hungry to give my best every time I step on the field.”

Group D: The ‘Group of Death’

Group D, often called the “Group of Death,” was always expected to see at least one full-member nation eliminated. Afghanistan, semifinalists in the 2024 T20 World Cup, fell victim to tough competition. Losses to New Zealand and South Africa meant their fate was no longer in their own hands.

Looking Ahead

Afghanistan will aim to end their tournament on a high note with a consolation win against Canada in their final Group D match on Thursday at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

In the previous edition, Afghanistan made history by reaching their first ICC World Cup semifinal, defeating New Zealand and Australia en route, before ultimately losing to South Africa in a memorable run.
