Hyderabad : Hyderabad Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar on Tuesday cautioned youth against performing objectionable acts on social media for the sake of “likes,” following a viral video that sparked public outrage.

The video, recorded near a Shiva temple in Shamshabad on Sunday during Mahashivratri, showed two youths allegedly offering a narcotic substance, believed to be ganja, to a Lord Shiva idol. In the clip, the duo claimed they were presenting “prasadam” to Shiva, while boasting that their offering was different from the traditional coconut. The video was later shared on social media, prompting widespread criticism from netizens.

Hyderabad Police Urge Youth Not to Risk Future for Social Media Fame

Responding to the incident, Hyderabad Police Commissioner Sajjanar posted on X, saying, “Maha Shivaratri is a symbol of devotion…a path to liberation. Offering intoxicating substances as prasadam on such a sacred day is disgraceful and perverse.” He warned that the act could lead to serious legal consequences under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and urged the youth not to jeopardize their future for temporary online fame.

“Such behavior will not be tolerated. Strict legal action will be taken,” Hyderabad Police Sajjanar added. He encouraged young people to use social media as a platform for creativity, not addiction.

Meanwhile, the Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) has reportedly begun investigating the incident.
