Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has instructed officials to fast-track the revival of all closed sugar mills in the state, calling the move essential for boosting rural employment and strengthening the agricultural economy. The directive came during a high-level review meeting held on Friday at 1 Anne Marg in Patna under the “Prosperous Industry–Empowered Bihar” component of the 7 Nischay Part-3 programme.

Senior officials from the industries, information technology, and sugarcane industries departments provided updates on the implementation of the scheme. The sugarcane industries department reported that the Sasamusa sugar mill in Gopalganj district is expected to resume operations soon—a development welcomed by the Chief Minister, who urged similar measures for other inactive units.

Several sugar mills across districts such as West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Saran, Muzaffarpur, Samastipur, and Darbhanga remain non-operational. CM Nitish Kumar stressed that reopening these mills promptly would directly benefit sugarcane farmers and generate local employment opportunities. He directed officials to develop a time-bound action plan to ensure all remaining mills are restarted without delay.

He also emphasized the need to establish new sugar mills in the state, underscoring Bihar’s aim to position itself among the five most developed states in India.

The meeting was attended by the Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, the Development Commissioner, and senior officials from the revenue, cooperative, industries, information technology, and sugarcane departments.
