Behind the spotlight and chart-topping success, Nick Jonas has opened up about one of the most profound and challenging experiences of his life. In a recent podcast appearance, the singer spoke candidly for the first time about the dramatic circumstances surrounding the birth of his daughter, Malti Marie Chopra Jonas, and the months of uncertainty that followed—an ordeal he says changed him forever.
“She Entered the World in Extremely Intense Conditions” : Nick Jonas
Nick Jonas revealed that Malti’s arrival unfolded far differently than he and his wife, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, had anticipated. While they had been preparing for her birth later in the year, an unexpected call suddenly altered everything.
“She came into the world under very intense circumstances, something I’ve never really talked about,” Nick Jonas said during his February 4 interview on On Purpose with Jay Shetty. “We thought she would arrive in April, and then we got a call saying it would be much sooner. From there, everything moved very fast, and she was born via surrogate.”
When Malti was born, the situation was critical. Weighing just 1 pound, 11 ounces, she required immediate medical intervention. Nick Jonas recalled how NICU staff acted swiftly, resuscitating and stabilizing her within moments. “She was so tiny and purple,” he said, praising the medical team who cared for her in those first crucial minutes.
A Grueling NICU Journey During the Pandemic
Malti spent the first three months of her life in neonatal intensive care, undergoing round-the-clock monitoring and multiple blood transfusions. Throughout that time, Nick Jonas and Priyanka took turns staying at the hospital, each covering 12-hour shifts to ensure their daughter was never alone.

The experience was intensified by the restrictions and emotional strain of the Covid-19 pandemic. “My wife and I did 12-hour shifts for about three and a half months,” Nick Jonas shared. “It was overwhelming. I can still remember the smell of the hospital. Being there every day was both reassuring and terrifying, especially seeing other families going through similar struggles.”
Gradually, Malti began to grow stronger. “She fought every single day,” he said. “After six blood transfusions, she was doing really well. After three and a half months, we finally got to bring her home.”
A Strength That Still Shines Through
Now four years old, Malti’s resilience continues to inspire her father. Nick Jonasbelieves there’s something deeply ingrained in her spirit that reflects her extraordinary beginning.
“I feel like she knows, in some way, how she came into the world,” he said. “Every day feels like a gift, and you can sense it in her energy—how excited she is about everything.”

While acknowledging that she likely has no conscious memory of those early months, Nick finds comfort in a deeper belief. “I don’t think she remembers it,” he said. “But spiritually, I believe there’s a sense of gratitude in her. She’s just remarkable.”
“She’s Magic in Every Way”
As Malti recently celebrated her fourth birthday, Nick reflected on how far she has come, growing emotional as he spoke about her future.
“Our daughter is incredible,” he said. “She’s magic in every way. She just turned four, and it blows my mind. When I look at her, I can see her future, and I know she’s going to do amazing things. I feel so lucky toNick Jonas daughter witness her magic. She’s perfect.”
