The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a comprehensive weather alert for the upcoming days, predicting a divergent weather pattern across the country. While Southern India is expected to receive light to heavy rainfall, much of North India will continue to endure a severe heatwave, with temperatures expected to exceed 40°C in several states.

According to the IMD bulletin released on Friday, the ongoing western disturbances and lack of rainfall have led to rising mercury levels across the northern belt, and the intense heat conditions are likely to continue until June 11.

Rainfall Relief in the South

The IMD reported that multiple districts in Karnataka will experience moderate to heavy rainfall starting from June 9, bringing relief from the heat and increasing cloud cover and humidity. This is expected to be accompanied by gentle breezes and overcast skies until then.

Rainfall is also predicted in Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Kerala, where scattered showers may lead to localized flooding, waterlogging, and power disruptions in vulnerable areas. The weather department has advised residents in coastal and low-lying regions to limit outdoor financial activities and remain cautious of water accumulation and slippery roads.

North India to Suffer Continued Heatwave

Contrasting sharply with the south, the northern states are forecast to continue facing scorching heat and dry conditions. The IMD said that Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh will witness rising temperatures by 2-3°C over the next few days.

The heatwave is primarily attributed to the absence of pre-monsoon showers and hot winds from the northwest. With no significant rainfall expected before June 12, temperatures are expected to remain persistently high, possibly peaking above 44°C in isolated regions.

Rainfall Likely After June 12 in the North

There is some hope on the horizon. The IMD mentioned that monsoon conditions are expected to advance into northern India around June 12, potentially easing the oppressive heat in the affected states.

However, meteorologists caution that this relief may be uneven and delayed in some districts, depending on local topography and wind patterns.

The IMD has urged residents in heat-affected northern states to:

• Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, especially during peak hours (12 p.m. to 4 p.m.)
• Stay hydrated and wear light, breathable clothing
• Follow local health advisories and heatwave preparedness guidelines

Meanwhile, those in rain-affected regions should:

• Secure loose outdoor items and avoid flood-prone zones
• Limit non-essential travel during heavy rain spells
• Be alert for possible landslides in hilly terrain
