Arrest of Sharmistha Panoli by Bengal Police Sparks National Uproar
Political firestorm erupts as BJP leaders back Panoli and accuse TMC of double standards over faith, expression, and youth freedom
The arrest of Sharmistha Panoli, a 22-year-old law student, over a controversial social media video commenting on India’s Operation Sindoor and Bollywood celebrities, has triggered a nationwide political storm. With multiple FIRs filed and her subsequent arrest by Kolkata Police from Gurugram on May 30, Panoli’s case has ignited a heated debate on freedom of expression, political bias, and faith-based sensitivities.
In the now-deleted video, Panoli had lashed out at Bollywood actors for what she called their silence on India’s military strikes on terror camps in Pakistan, using strong language that sparked massive online backlash. She later issued a public apology. However, the legal action against her did not abate.
BJP Leaders Rally Behind Panoli, Slam “Selective Outrage”
Among the first to defend Panoli was BJP MP and actress Kangana Ranaut, who called for her immediate release, acknowledging that the language used was “unpleasant” but arguing that such expressions are common among youth today.
“She apologised for her statements and that should be enough. No need to bully and harass her further. She should be released immediately,” Ranaut said.
Adding to the chorus, Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan shared an old video of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of hypocrisy and selective application of the law. In the video, Banerjee refers to the BJP’s ideology as “Ganda Dharma,” which Kalyan said caused deep hurt to Hindu sentiments — yet no action was taken.
“Where is the outrage when elected MPs mock Sanatana Dharma? Where is their apology or arrest?” he asked.
Political Allegations Fly Over Faith and Law
The incident has snowballed into a broader political and cultural clash, with the BJP accusing the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of using the law to target Hindu voices while ignoring offensive statements made by its own leaders.
Amit Malviya, head of BJP’s IT Cell, launched a scathing attack on the TMC and Mamata Banerjee, claiming the arrest was politically motivated.
“This isn’t just about Bengal — it’s about how a young Hindu woman is being targeted to appease a vote bank,” he posted on X.
Malviya and other BJP leaders have framed the arrest as part of a larger pattern of religious bias and suppression of dissent, particularly when it comes from those who express strong nationalist or religious views.
Legal and Custodial Developments
According to Kolkata Police, multiple FIRs had been registered against Panoli after the video went viral. Legal notices were served, but she remained absconding until her arrest from Gurugram on May 30. She has been remanded to 14-day judicial custody until June 13.
While being escorted from court, Panoli told reporters:
“The way this harassment is being done in a democracy, this is not democracy.”
Her arrest has since galvanized youth voices, free speech activists, and political figures across party lines, raising concerns about cyber policing and the limits of online expression, particularly in politically sensitive contexts.
Operation Sindoor: The Trigger Behind the Storm
Operation Sindoor, an alleged cross-border strike by Indian forces on terror camps in Pakistan, has stirred strong nationalist sentiments across the country. Many social media users and influencers, including Panoli, criticized Bollywood’s silence on the operation, contrasting it with their vocal stance on issues perceived to be progressive or global in nature.
Her video was meant to spotlight that silence — but ended up offending multiple communities, resulting in legal action, arrests, and a larger ideological showdown.
