Operation Abhyaas: India Gears Up with Massive Nationwide Mock Drill Amid Rising Tensions

As the sun rises over a tense and watchful nation, India is on high alert—not just with armed forces at the borders, but with civilians preparing themselves too. In an unprecedented move, the Union Home Ministry has directed all states and Union Territories to carry out nationwide mock drills today, May 7, across 244 civil defence districts, a step not seen since the 1971 war.

This large-scale civil defense practice, dubbed “Operation Abhyaas,” comes in the aftermath of the April 22 terror assault in Pahalgam, which rocked the country and killed 26 people, the majority of whom were tourists enjoying the spring beauty of Jammu and Kashmir.

Preparing for New and Complex Threats

In an official statement to states, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) claimed that these exercises are in direct reaction to India’s “new and complex threats/challenges” today. These threats, while rooted in cross-border tensions, also highlight the evolving nature of warfare—one that demands not just military preparedness, but civilian resilience.

“It would be prudent that the states/UTs maintain optimum civil defence preparedness at all times,” said a letter from the Directorate General of Fire Services, Civil Defence, and Home Guards.

What’s Happening Today?

Across states from Delhi and Kerala to Maharashtra and Arunachal Pradesh, these drills are simulating emergency situations like air raids, bombings, and communication blackouts. Here’s what people can expect:

Testing air raid warning systems in crowded localities

Communication drills between state control rooms and the Indian Air Force

Evacuation rehearsals from schools, offices, and markets

Blackout exercises for critical infrastructure to test stealth preparedness

Warden training and civilian education on safety protocols

Camouflage checks for high-risk zones

Firefighting and rescue ops simulations

These are more than just symbolic acts—they are life-saving rehearsals, teaching everyday citizens what to do if a real strike were to occur.

 A Countrywide Coordination Effort

In Delhi, over 60 sirens are being activated in coordination with civil defence volunteers in all 11 districts. In Kerala, drills are being carried out in all 14 districts. Maharashtra is rolling out mock drills in 16 cities, and Hyderabad has scheduled its preparedness activities within the Outer Ring Road from 4:00 PM to 4:30 PM.

Meanwhile, in the Northeast, states like Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh are running district-level earthquake and terror preparedness drills involving schoolchildren and first responders.

Why This Matters

Following the deadly attack in Pahalgam, tensions have risen dramatically between India and Pakistan. The Indian armed forces responded with Operation Sindoor, a precision strike targeting terror camps across the LoC. Pakistan has since accused India of preparing for further military action.

Amid such escalations, India’s civil defence drills are not about fear—they are about preparedness.

🇮🇳 A Nation Stands Ready

While the army and air force remain on alert at the borders, the message today is clear: Every citizen has a role in national defence. Mock drills like these not only test systems but instill confidence and calm in the face of chaos.

As sirens ring out across cities and schoolchildren crouch under benches during simulated raids, India is quietly building a shield—one that’s made not just of missiles and tanks, but of awareness, unity, and resolve.
