Punjab-Kerala Pact on the Horizon as Minister Khudian Advocates Agri-Fisheries Innovation Exchange

In a significant step toward inter-state agricultural collaboration, Punjab Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister S. Gurmeet Singh Khudian visited the ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Kumarakom, Kerala, to explore knowledge-sharing opportunities in agriculture, fisheries, and animal husbandry. The visit is part of an ongoing initiative to promote sustainable and technology-driven farming practices between states.

Minister Khudian, accompanied by Principal Secretary of Animal Husbandry Mr. Rahul Bhandari and other senior officials, held detailed discussions with experts at KVK Kumarakom. The Punjab delegation explored the region’s successful integrated farming systems, particularly the convergence of aquaculture and agriculture. The team was notably impressed by the region’s cage fish farming practices and inland aquaculture techniques, which have significantly contributed to rural livelihoods and food security in Kerala.

Minister Khudian praised the innovative methods adopted in the region, including organic cultivation, drone-assisted paddy seed broadcasting, and eco-friendly tourism initiatives. “Kumarakom’s integrated farming model reflects a holistic approach that aligns with Punjab’s vision for sustainable agriculture,” he said. “We are especially inspired by their use of drone technology for seed sowing and their community-based initiatives that empower women and promote value addition.”

The delegation observed how KVK Kottayam supports the development of agri-based enterprises by promoting value addition in fish, fruits, vegetables, and spices. The center also facilitates the production of organic manure, bio-pesticides, and nutrient mixtures, helping local farmers enhance productivity while preserving environmental health.

Punjab officials expressed particular interest in adopting drone technology for seed broadcasting and exploring sustainable aquaculture models suited to the northern state’s climate and water bodies. Meanwhile, Kerala officials showed enthusiasm for learning from Punjab’s advancements in agricultural mechanisation, high-yield crop varieties, and market infrastructure.

Dr. Gursharan Singh Bedi, Director of Animal Husbandry, Punjab, emphasized the broader impact of the visit. “This engagement lays the foundation for a collaborative framework between Punjab and Kerala. By combining our strengths, we can drive innovation in agriculture, fisheries, and animal husbandry across both states,” he said.

Discussions are underway to establish formal agreements that will enable joint training programs, technology transfer, and research collaborations. The initiative is expected to enhance productivity, promote sustainability, and create new income opportunities for farmers in both regions.

As India pushes for agricultural modernization and sustainability, the Punjab-Kerala alliance could serve as a model for other states to follow—where innovation, cooperation, and knowledge exchange pave the way for resilient rural economies.
