Malayalam Rapper Vedan Arrested After Ganja Seizure in Kochi
Kochi, April 28, 2025 – Malayalam rapper Vedan, whose real name is Hirandas Murali, was arrested along with eight others after police seized six grams of ganja from his apartment in Tripunithura, Kochi.
The Hill Palace Police acted on a tip-off and found the group allegedly consuming cannabis. All nine were taken into custody and later released on station bail. Although the quantity of ganja falls under personal use, the arrest has sparked controversy, especially because Vedan is known for his anti-drug stance in his music.

During the raid, police also noticed a leopard tooth pendant worn by the rapper. Vedan claimed it was purchased from Thailand, but officials have alerted the Forest Department to examine if it violates the Wildlife Protection Act. If the tooth is genuine, he could face additional legal consequences.
Vedan has earned popularity for his powerful rap songs addressing caste oppression, social injustice, and youth awareness. His arrest has shocked fans, many of whom viewed him as a voice for change. Critics point to the contradiction between his message and his actions.
“He told us to stay away from drugs—now he’s caught using them,” a disappointed fan commented on social media.
The case is currently under further investigation. While minor drug possession may not result in harsh punishment, the wildlife aspect could escalate the situation.
