HDFC vs ICICI Bank: Which One Deserves Your Money in 2025?

by Kashish Sachdeva

After FY25’s Q4 ends, should you put your money into HDFC Bank or ICICI Bank?

With the Q4 FY25 results freshly announced, both HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank have caught the attention of investors. But if you’re wondering which one to buy, the answer depends on what you’re really looking for—long-term safety or short-term gains?

The Numbers Speak First

HDFC Bank announced a net profit of ₹17,616 crore, an increase of 6.7%. Its interest income was up 10.3%, but the numbers were a bit subdued compared to last year due to a one-time boost it had back then.

It was clear that ICICI Bank was the stronger candidate, as their net interest income increased by 11% and their profits by 18%. In addition, its net interest margin (NIM) of 4.41% is higher than HDFC’s (3.54%), indicating that it is profiting more from its loans.

Who’s Got the Edge on Growth?

HDFC may be the bigger bank overall—with more deposits and a larger balance sheet—but ICICI is growing faster, especially in business banking. Its loan book jumped over 13%, and its focus on expansion is clear with 241 new branches added recently.

Stability or Speed?

When it comes to safety, HDFC is still on top. It has fewer bad loans (1.33% Gross NPA vs. ICICI’s 1.67%) and stronger capital reserves. If you’re someone who values peace of mind over thrill, HDFC is a solid pick.

But if you’re chasing growth and don’t mind a little more volatility, ICICI could be your winner.

Dividends and Market Mood

HDFC offered ₹22 per share in dividends, while ICICI offered ₹11. On the charts, HDFC is stable but slow-moving, while ICICI just broke out of a price consolidation, which is usually a bullish sign. Traders now have their eyes set on ₹1500 as the next level.

So, Which One Should You Buy?

Go for HDFC Bank if you’re a long-term investor looking for consistency, reliability, and steady dividends.

Choose ICICI Bank if you want faster returns and can handle a bit more movement in the stock.

If you’re confused or can’t decide whether to invest in HDFC Bank or ICICI Bank, you can invest in both, instead of choosing just one.
